Overall, the 2020 harvest was a success, despite the fact that drought-like conditions persisted throughout the season and average maximum temperatures were slightly higher than in 2019. It should be noted that no precipitation fell during the ripening stage for this vintage.
Despite the capricious weather conditions during the 2020 grape harvest, excellent vineyard management was achieved thanks to the expertise of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild grape growers and winemakers, together with suitable irrigation techniques and correct predictions on harvest dates. In the end, the balance between aromatics, structure, and elegance on the palate showcases the terroir in all its qualities.
In order to give the wine its fruit driven, complex style, the 70 of the vintage is matured in old oak French barrels for 10 months before bottling.
Lovely, brilliant, intense ruby red colour with purple highlights.
Very intense, laden with red wild berries like rosehip and Chilean guava that give way to plum and cherry, with nicely integrated notes of toffee and black tobacco imparted by ageing in French oak.
Starts out fresh and juicy. Delicious acidity on the palate, refreshing and rich, with a good sensation of volume. The structure is elegant despite noticeable tannins, and the finish is long and very persistent. The wine reveals the potent, elegant character of Chilean Carignan from the coastal dryland vineyards of the Maule Valley (Secano Costero).
Particularly hot and dry conditions in 2019 enabled the grapes to reach optimum maturity.
Lower-than-average rainfall, concentrated almost entirely during the winter, combined with slightly higher-than-average temperatures, ensured perfect conditions for the vine growth cycle, enabling the grapes to reach optimum aromatic and phenolic maturity.
These exceptional conditions generated natural concentration while preserving balance and refinement, allowing the grapes to achieve the purest expression of the identity of each terroir.
As a result, the wines express all the generosity and power of Chile while remaining elegant and silky.
Offering excellent ageing potential, 2019 is one of the great Chilean vintages.
70% of the wine is matured for 10 months in 2- to 3-year old French oak barrels. 30% of the wine is matured in stainless steel vats.
A deep ruby red with an intense purple hue.
The very fresh, fruit-forward nose reveals aromas of blackberry, musk rose, morello cherry and wild herbs, together with delicate cedar notes that come from time spent in oak.
The intense attack leads into a well-structured, full-bodied mid-palate underpinned by firm tannins, with a return of the fruit notes found on the nose. Good acidity ensures a long, lingering finish.
